Are you struggling with teaching place value for standards 4.NBT.1 or 5.NBT.1? I have some quick and easy place value review activities that can help – and they’re interactive!
This standard requires students to:
- 4th grade: Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in any one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.
- 5th grade: Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
Allowing students to have a visual way to represent numbers and their values is incredibly important, especially when comparing them to the value of other digits.
Watch the videos below to see how you can illustrate and review this skill with your students.
4.NBT.1. Place Value with Whole Numbers
Resources are from my Interactive Place Value Chart and 4th Grade Place Value Activities.
5.NBT.1. Place Value with Decimals
Resources are from my Interactive Place Value Chart and 5th Grade Place Value Activities.
Having an interactive place value chart was such a game-changer in my classroom, especially with individual charts for each student. They can easily slip the charts into a dry erase pocket (*aff link) to use while working on classwork to show their thinking.
Having the resources ready to go is also incredibly helpful. I laminated and stored each place value activity into a file folder with printouts of student recording sheets so that I could just grab them easily and use them as centers or for interventions with small groups or individual students.
